Spiritual or Born Again? A Heart Check

Many people today say, “I’m very spiritual.” On the surface, that sounds admirable—who wouldn’t want to be spiritual, to seek higher meaning, or to live a good life? But what does “spiritual” really mean? Spirituality can be about feelings, practices, or rituals. It can be about meditation, mindfulness, or simply trying to be a “good person.” All of these things have value, but they do not determine where we spend eternity.

Imagine someone watering a plant in a pot. They are careful, attentive, and thoughtful. Yet if the plant is in a pot with no soil—no roots—it can never truly grow. In the same way, someone can appear spiritual, do spiritual things, even feel spiritual, yet remain disconnected from the life-giving root that is Jesus Christ.

Being born again is different. Jesus didn’t leave room for vagueness when He said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Being born again is about a personal, life-transforming relationship with Him. It’s surrendering our hearts to Jesus, trusting Him for forgiveness, and inviting Him to be the Lord of our lives. It’s not about trying harder, doing better, or feeling more spiritual—it’s about receiving His life, His Spirit, and His love.

Think of a small room with a single candle. It gives some light, some warmth. Now imagine the same room filled with the sun streaming through the windows. That’s the difference between a life that is merely spiritual and a life that is truly born again—the light, the warmth, and the life are so much fuller when Jesus fills the heart.

Take a moment to reflect today. Are you relying on feelings, routines, or your own goodness? Or have you truly surrendered to Jesus? If your heart longs for new life, take it to Him in prayer. He is ready to give it freely.

Being spiritual can be admirable—but it’s not enough for an eternity in heaven. Don’t settle for “good enough” spirituality. Salvation is never based on our performance. We do not want to miss heaven. Seek the transforming relationship only Jesus offers, and you will know peace, joy, and security that lasts forever.

The Bible says we must be born again in order to enter the kingdom of heaven. And those who come to Jesus and invite him into their hearts and lives as their personal Savior, have the promise that He will never ever leave them, forsake them, nor turn them away. That's eternal security. John 3:16
