It's scientifically observed that the brain still has electrical activity minutes following death and inactivity of other organs. It's the same kinda activity found during dreaming, memory recall/flashbacks and meditation. Your final waves of consciousness could be taking you anywhere. It's assumed your life flashes in replays before your eyes.
From the accounts I've heard of people who have experienced near death experiences, there's always description of there being a bright light, I fully believe that. I think anything else is a personal manifestation based on your life.
They found this when using an EEG to detect the seizures in an epilepsy patient who happened to have a heart attack and pass.

@HijabaDabbaDoo Very interesting. Thanks.

Nothing is impossible for God so I believe in NDE's, as well. God used these people to come back to tell others what to expect, but we already know what to expect from the Bible. However, not all people who have near-death experiences will see a bright light. Some won't make it to heaven, the Bible is clear on that, and that is not because God doesn't want them, but because they chose to ignore Christ's invitation for salvation. Only the individual can make that choice. They are responsible for where they spend eternity. Christ throws out a lifeline to all in the world to receive salvation; to escape the condemnation that sin placed on us all. If they don't grab for that lifeline, that will not be Christ's fault. He offers it to all, but there are those who say, "I want nothing to do with you." Though it breaks God's heart, he will give them their hearts' desire. He will not go against that.
