Five Reasons Why Paul Said Physical Baptism Cannot Save One's Soul

The Apostle Paul, strictly emphasized salvation by grace, faith, and Christ alone. Paul taught that physical baptism does not, in itself, save a person's soul. Paul confirms this in Romans:

Romans 3:28: “For we hold that one is justified by faith APART from works of the law.”

Romans 5:1: adds, "Therefore, since we have been made righteous through his faithfulness, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ". [/c][/b]

These verses emphasize that righteousness is a gift received through faith in Jesus, not something earned through "works".

Baptism is not the new birth, in any way, shape, or form. Don't confuse physical baptism, with God's grace-saving salvation, followed by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Physical baptism, is an outward expression symbolizing dying to one's old life and sinful ways (as one goes under the water) and rising from the old dead self, to a new life in Christ (as one comes up from the water.) That "work" saves no one. It is not "baptism of the soul". It serves no purpose in saving the soul, nor does it have anything to do with our soul. God's saving grace transforms one's spirit when they accept Jesus as Savior, thereby saving one's soul. Baptism is merely a public confession of faith, showing that one is not ashamed of Christ and has given their heart and life to Christ.

If one could get saved by physically going to get baptized, that would be considered a works-based salvation which Paul spoke against in Romans 3:28.

Baptism of the Holy Spirit, or as some might call it, "Baptism WITH the Holy Spirit", are one in the same, describing a distinct experience where a person has made a life commitment to Christ... repenting of their sins and asking Jesus to come into their heart and life as Savior. Only then can the Holy Spirit come to the believer and indwell them, transforming their heart and life by His prescence.

He is a constant spiritual companion, and empowers believers with God's Spirit, giving them strength and guidance for each day, purpose, and spiritual guidance in ministry for the special spiritual gifts that the Holy Spirit chooses for each new "born-again believer". One cannot be "born again" or receive the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit", unless they have asked and received Jesus as Savior, and then the Holy Spirit of Promise comes upon them to dwell in them, and places His Seal on the new Believer, as God's own. The Bible is concrete on that.

The following point to the following reasons why baptism cannot save one soul:

1. Salvation is by faith alone:

Paul emphasized that salvation is a free gift received through faith in Jesus Christ, not as a result of human actions or works.

Ephesians 2:8-9 states that salvation is "by grace... through faith... NOT of yourselves: it is the gift of God: NOT of works, lest any man should boast".

Therefore, since baptism is a physical act or "work," it cannot be the means by which someone is saved.

2. Baptism is an outward symbol of an inward change:

Baptism is seen as a public declaration of a person's faith and commitment to Christ, signifying the internal transformation that has already occurred through the work of the Holy Spirit.

It symbolizes the believer's identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection, representing the death of the old self and the resurrection to a new life in Christ.

Water baptism gives us a SYMBOLIC PICTURE of the cleansing and forgiveness of sins that a person has ALREADY RECEIVED through faith in Christ.

3. Paul's emphasis on preaching the gospel over baptizing:

In 1 Corinthians 1:17, Paul says that Christ "did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel".

This confirms that preaching the gospel, which leads to faith, is most important, and baptism is a subsequent act of obedience for those who have already believed.

4. It does not cause one to be "reborn".

It does not unite us with Christ in a saving way. All of that happens by God's grace and faith alone...accepting Jesus as our personal Savior....by the work of Christ's atoning blood on the cross. If Jesus had not shed His blood for us, we could never have been forgiven for our sins.

"Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin", found in Hebrews 9:22.

All this pointing to the blood of Christ, effectually cleansing us from all sin.

5. Examples of people saved without physical baptism:

The thief on the cross was saved through faith in Jesus without being physically baptized.

Old Testament saints were saved by faith alone without any form of water baptism.

The above emphasizes that while physical baptism doesn't save, it's still a wonderful testimony and very important to Christ, who wants us to follow up in our commitment to him, by being baptized, in that it follows Christ's example and demonstrates serious commitment to Him.

And if any other person in any other book says something, why is it any more or less important than Paul? It’s difficult to pick a side when both sides are fiction.
@Cyclist The Bible is not just "any other book". No other Book prophecies our future in such great detail. It's astounding how accurate it is, every single prophecy 100% accurate and fulfilled, to date! No other book can claim that. I mention Paul, for the reason he was a disciple of Christ...very close to him, knowledgeable in his teachings. It depends on whom people have their faith anchored IN, but God's truths never fail. Heaven and Earth shall pass away, but God's Word and his truths shall never pass away. I will trust God over flawed, sinful man, any day.

Matthew 24:35 and Luke 21:33, emphasizes the enduring and eternal nature of God's word, contrasting it with the temporary nature of the physical world. This means that while the physical universe and everything in it will eventually cease to exist, the words of God, as recorded in scripture, shall remain forever. Jesus is really our only hope these days. The Bible teaches the grace of God and the importance of looking to God, not man, for salvation.

"What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" is a quote from the Bible, specifically Mark 8:36 and Matthew 16:26. It emphasizes that material wealth and worldly success are ultimately meaningless, if they come at the cost of one's spiritual well-being and eternal life. It also emphasizes the higher value of spiritual health and a relationship with God, over worldly pursuits.

@LadyGrace could you tell me a few prophesies that were predicted in the Bible and came true after the New Testament was codified? They need to conform to the scientific principle of falsifiability. A solution that is correct under any assumption is no solution at all. A true fulfillment of a prophecy is correct under the specific instances of the prophecy, but if we change specific facts either in the prophecy or in the fulfillment, the fulfillment would no longer be correct. That is how we know a result is true.
@Cyclist That's man's definition. Prophecies do not need to conform to the scientific principle of falsifiability. God's Word is above human understanding and far more superior. We meet HIS standards, not the other way around. Man's ways, and thinking, will never compare to God's wisdom. God sets the standard, not man. He is the Divine Authority.

Divine communication operates on a level that transcends empirical verification or falsification as defined by science. The reliability of prophecy stems from the divine origin and the authority attributed to God. It is a matter of faith and trust in the source of the message, rather than a process of scientific testing. Man will never be smarter than God.

In the Bible, prophecy is tested primarily by its fulfillment and alignment with God's existing word. If a prophecy doesn't come to pass or contradicts established scripture, it is false. Additionally, the character of the prophet and the message itself are scrutinized...looking for evidence of love, encouragement, and truth. As I mentioned in my previous reply, prophecies from the Bible that have come to pass, have been fulfilled. Careful Bible study of prophecy and stated fulfillment, will confirm that. A true Prophets prophecy, always comes to 100% fulfillment. Such as Isaiah's, as he prophesied some 500 years before, of Jesus' suffering and death on the cross, as described in the New Testament in great detail.

@LadyGrace nope. You are wrong and if they do not conform to falsifiability then those fulfillments are false. You are just defending their falsehood.

Here is the point. Faith is legitimate. You are entitled to your faith, as is everyone else. You are NOT entitled to faulty logic or to wrong facts. Faith cannot justify saying 2+2=5. That is never the case, even for a supernatural supreme being. Once you start using your faith to justify a distorted view of reality and logical fallacies, you are just plain wrong. I really expected more from you. You were so fervent that 100% of the prophecies came true, that I expected just a few of them would pass the test of logic. If you need to distort basic tests of reality to make your views come true, then you are on very shaky ground. That is true both cognitively and in your aberrant sense of faith. The sad thing is that faith could be strong and legitimate if it is left in its proper domain. You could have done that. But instead you chose to invalidate your faith in an attempt to use it to distort logic and reality.

I will leave it at that. I’ve said enough to make the point.
@Cyclist Think and assume as you like. The Word of God is never wrong nor falsified, and that is my only source, the truths of God's Word. The "faulty logic and wrong facts" you accuse me of, come strictly from God's own Word. So in essence, you're calling God a liar, when I quote His Word. You're trying to use man-made logic for what God has proclaimed truth in His Word. Won't work.

The phrase "There is a way that seems right to a man" originates from the Book of Proverbs in the Bible and suggests that actions or paths that appear correct or beneficial to an individual, can ultimately lead to negative consequences or destruction. It highlights the deceptive nature of human judgment, especially when unguided by God's wisdom and divine principles.

God's Word says that true spiritual understanding comes through the Holy Spirit of a born-again believer, not just human intellect or personal desires. The Holy Spirit is essential for discerning spiritual truth. Without the Spirit's guidance, a person's interpretations can be skewed by their own biases and flawed understanding.

"The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them, because they are discerned only through the Spirit." 1st Corinthians 2:14
