Democritus of Abdera,

named the building blocks of matter atomos, meaning literally “indivisible,” about 430 bce. Without any physical evidence. Aristotle disagreed with Democritus and offered his own idea of the composition of matter. According to Aristotle, everything was composed of four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Deomcritus' theory better explained things, but Aristotle was more influential, so his ideas prevailed. So in this case people believed what seemed logical. But to know the truth meant looking deeper and using more than just the evidence. How interesting. 🤔

According to Aristotle, who died in 322 BC, not only did heavier objects fall faster than lighter ones, but an object that weighed twice as much as another would fall twice as fast.

It took Galileo, dropping multiple pairs of objects off the Leaning Tower of Pisa around 1590, to bring Aristotle into question. That's about 1900 years!!
