How would you describe Wetherspoons to someone who has never been before?

RubySoo · 56-60, F Best Comment
Cheap and cheerful pub/ restaurant chain. Some also have confortable rooms to rent too. The buildings themselves are often of historic importance...or have had a previous life as something interesting and there are always photos and info displayed to show the buildings previous history.
Good value meals...especially breakfast.
Loos are always a hike up or down lots of stairs! Lol

@RubySoo Spot on description! 👍
@meggie yeah…so have I but my local one only has one floor!
Come to think of it-so does the one in Newport too,

@TheSirfurryanimalWales well it could be sonething you have missed out on!!!

Proper food at affordable prices.
Good prices on the beer too.
Been in quite a few.
And today heading to my local one for Cod and chips.
My only complaint…you have to pay extra for Black Pudding when you have breakfast.
The Crown in Worcester is great….
And I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the one I was in in Nottingham recently!( Remembered-It’s the Roebuck Inn).
But today off to The John Fielding named after a local guy who fought in the Boer War.
Great value ales and food- great for meeting up with friends or date night.

A variety of people from different backgrounds go there- you can see tradesmen drinking lager or the upper middle class dude in his jumper enjoying his red wine.

They are very convenient for a lone person with a bit too much shopping because you can just find a table and order through the app rather than struggle carrying a drink and all your shopping from the bar or dumping the bags by a table and worrying that someone might nick them while you are fetching a drink.

As for the loos being a long way away, well there are some compensations. The loos are often upstairs and the stairs are often quite grand and in view of the whole bar. So going up and down them in heels and a short miniskirt gives all the men (and women too) a good view. I felt a bit over exposed the first time but decided to view it as a bit of faded glamour the next!

@meggie I don't think I've ever visited Tunbridge Wells, perhaps I should add it to my list of places to go to. As for the knickers, well I usually wear thongs. And in the summer I'm bare legged. I only go without knickers if I'm wearing a long full skirt in the winter. :-)

I like Wetherspoon's because they are unpretentious and it looks like some nice buildings have been rescued from demolition or at least unsympathetic conversions. On the other hand some are surprisingly inefficient. There is one in Plymouth that took fifteen minutes to deliver my pint and another fifteen to deliver my food a couple of years ago.

@ninalanyon you are probably better suited to the ones with upstairs loos. These pubs, as you know, have no live music or entertainment. So they may find your "knicker flashing" a good conversation piece...and you may even meet that special somebody there!

@meggie I did cause a bit of confusion in a Wetherspoon's in the Nottingham area a couple of years ago. I was reapplying lipstick in the mirror when the door opened and man took one step inside saw me and then beat a hasty retreat. He came back a few seconds later looking a bit sheepish. He obviously thought he'd gone into the ladies.

Pub-restaurant chain. 'Value for money' proposition on Britain's rather pricey 'High Streets', hence very successful. Premises tend to be large and sometimes crowded. They are OK but nothing exceptional.

Cheap and cheerful but avoid if near a major football ground on match day! :)
Nimbus · M
@BritishFailedAesthetic That may be true but begging for free food and drinks upsets the staff ;)
@Nimbus
meggie · F
@Nimbus they put security on the doors and separate the fans into different pubs, so it's usually ok....unless it's a Manchester wetherspoons!!!
Highskirt · 56-60, M
Budget prices. Perfect for ale drinkers as they tend to change stocks around regularly
@Highskirt And some do it as cheap as 1.99 a pint!
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
I read that as change socks 😆@Highskirt
meggie · F
@BritishFailedAesthetic we've never had it so good!!!
Hayleywg · 51-55, F
Cheap and cheerful, does the job it sets out to do
Never been. Looks intriguing. 🤔

Toilets are always miles away.

Is the great wood-JD Wetherspoons part of the same chain? I always pass by it when I'm going to the mall and the food smells so good. I cannot afford to eat out but it does smell fantastic and seems semi-classy.
Celt50 · 51-55, M
Its place to go if you want a drink at 9am 🍻
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Never had a good experience in them personally.
They tend to have a good selection of beers but the food is 'microwavable' fare and pretty tasteless
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
Old spoon?

Yet to be serious, I do not know what it is.
meggie · F
@JoyfulSilence a UK budget pub chain. They tend to take over old historic buildings, so they can be quite interesting places to visit, and the food and drink is quite reasonably priced.
an alcoholics dream
meggie · F
@jackjones68 that is true. Many retired people arrive in droves and can afford to go most days. But, it gets them out of the house and many have little else in their lives.
@meggie Sad but true Cheap drinks and open for breakfast.
RedBaron · M
Why that place specifically?
