Excessive weight gain is a relatively new phenomenon. For most of our human history our diets consisted of plant based materials and some meat..all of which had very few carbohydrates yet those humans also did huge amounts of physical work. They could have done with more carbs. Suddenly though we are in a time where we have industries pushing processed carbs onto us wherever we look and at the same time are encouraged to do little exercise. The best paying jobs are behind desks, parents drive their kids to school, Physical ed is no longer compulsory. Gaining excess weight is affecting nearly everyone on the planet. It takes a lot of work to stay a healthy weight now and in some environments it's almost impossible. You should try and reach a healthy weight just for health reasons, but it can be very difficult now.

@Theresia It's never too late. My sister never exercised in her life and was over weight right up until she was 45 and her kids had left home. Then she suddenly took up jogging to get fit, and loved it so much that she now goes in Triathlons and is super fit and is a different person. You don't have to do what she's done but it's not too late, and it could change your life :)
