Either throw yourself in and go for it, or exercise at home until you feel in good enough shape to do it in public

There are some times when gyms are relatively quiet. Try to go those times.
Keep in mind most people are more interested in their own workout and not paying attention to you.
But mostly, i agree with twofacetoo: throw yourself into it.
