Another sad day in baseball...we've lost the legendary hall of famer, Orlando Cepeda. And within 10 days of the loss of the great Willie Mays.
The Giants traded Orlando to the Cardinals in 1966 for Ray Sadecki...considered to be the worst trade among a long line of horrible trades in Giants history. Though I know Cepeda came up with the Giants organization, my memories of him actually playing are when he wore a Cardinal uniform.
The announcement of Cepeda's passing came during the 6th inning of last night's Giants v Dodgers game. And while the news was sad, the matchup was appropriate. Those who understand the history of baseball know that the rivalry between the Giants and Dodgers ranks up there with those of the Yankees v Red Sox, or Cardinals v Cubs.
Last night's game did not lack for drama. The Dodgers tied the game in the 9th, 3-3, but the Giants won the game in dramatic fashion with a walk-off two run homer in the bottom half of the frame. I believe the now angelic, Baby Bull, was watching the team.
Rest in peace, Orlando.
