Vayu (वायु, Vāyu) is a Sanskrit word meaning “air,” “wind,” or “breath.” In Hindu tradition, Vayu is also the deity/personification of the wind.

AI chose VAYU-1 because it seemed fitting for a biological space traveler—something associated with air, breath, movement, and traveling through an otherwise inhospitable environment.

It wasn't intended as an acronym, although we could certainly invent one for the spacecraft program—for example, Vacuum-Adapted Yield-efficient Unit.
