I’ve received many reports from farmers and those who live in rural areas throughout the country about the impact of hyperscale data centers on wildlife and farm animals.
I’m a big animal lover, so this issue is close to my heart.
In my conversation with Clayton Tucker, a fourth-generation cattle farmer from Lampasas, Texas, who serves as secretary of the Texas Farmers Union and is running for Texas Commissioner of Agriculture, he talked about how the subsonic noise from DCs is very detrimental to cattle, goats, chickens, and more.
I’ve heard from a a cattle veterinarian practicing in Wisconsin for more than 40 years, helping dairymen keep their cattle healthy.
He believes data centers will deplete agricultural water sources needed for cattle and irrigation of crops.
“Given the poor condition of our electrical grid, massive earth currents will be needed to balance voltages that will wipe out animal health for miles around,” he wrote. “I have seen first hand farms and families that have been decimated by 'stray voltage' (actually ground currents returning to substations). Problem is, until they hook the DC up to grid, we won't be able to start measuring the currents and by then it will be too late.”
Research from the National Wildlife Federation says that poorly coordinated transmission expansion [like we are seeing for data centers] “can cause direct habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation and disrupt migratory pathways.” One minute
