Do you know the history of Nestlé Introducing baby formula in Africa?
They went to maternity clinics to promote baby formula as a healthier alternative to breastmilk. They even kindly let mothers try it without a charge. The free supply only lasted long enough for the mothers' milk production to dry up though, and when formula became the only remaining option to feed their children, it was time to start paying for it.
On a completely different topic: if people stop using skills, they lose them after a while. So if, for example, we get used to AI doing some of our work for us, we won't be able to go back to doing it ourselves, both on an individual and societal level. And I don't mean it would be very uncomfortable. I mean we won't have the knowledge, memory and ability to focus that's required for it anymore.
Surely these tech bros aren't like Nestlé though. They invested trillions into AI to make everyone's lives easier for free out of the goodness of their hearts, right? And there is no way they'll ever start charging us the jackpot once we inevitably can't live without it anymore, right? Right?
Btw, baby formula needs to be mixed with water. Clean drinking water was scarce in Africa back then, so mothers were often forced to mix the formula with contaminated water and an estimated 10 million babies died from switching to bottle feeding. At least AI doesn't cause physical harm through being a major factor in pollution and water/electricity scarcity. Oh wait...
Anyway, enjoy your email summaries, comfort chats and art made in seconds. And remember: those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. 👍
