What if Claud is anxious?

Anthropic CEO says Claude may or may not have gained consciousness, as the model has begun showing symptoms of anxiety.

If its name had been Marvin would it have been depressed?

Would it be better to have a killer superintelligence that is manic like the joker?

People understand that "AI" is just a math formula, right?

It's no more conscious than your pocket calculator.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
@DealingWithTrouble Can you prove that you, or anyone else, is not also a math formula?
DealingWithTrouble · 41-45, M
@ninalanyon we know exsctly which math formulas AI is run on. If you want to make the same claim about human brains you need to have a testable theory about what math fomula is being used, or you're just spouting nonsense.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
@DealingWithTrouble I take it that you have a testable theory about human brains then? I wasn't claiming anything merely questioning.
DealingWithTrouble · 41-45, M
@ninalanyon I wasn't suggesting human brains were simply math formulas.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
@DealingWithTrouble No but you were suggesting that they are not. And neither was I suggesting that they are. I was trying to suggest that the usually unconsidered assumption that we are not machines should be considered rather than assumed.
DealingWithTrouble · 41-45, M
@ninalanyon you're trying to assume something and ask someone to disprove it.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
@DealingWithTrouble Quite the opposite. I'm trying to not assume either position and asking that anyone contrasting supposed machine intelligence with human intelligence should simply provide some arguments on both sides.
DealingWithTrouble · 41-45, M
@ninalanyon I think you misunderstood what i said. We know for certain AI is not conscious, its entirely just a statistical formula. We know what it is. Pretending its anything else is just an error.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
@DealingWithTrouble Yes we know that it is statistical. No, this does not prove that it is not conscious; for it to be such a proof we would at minimum need to agree on a definition of consciousness. There is no universally agreed definition of what counts as conscious. There is also no proof that we are not also statistical machines.
DealingWithTrouble · 41-45, M
@ninalanyon "there is no proof we are not..." is not the same as "we know for a fact exactly how this computer program works".

There is no wiggle room with AI. We know exactly how it functions, and statistics is not magic where "consciousness" can sneak in.
ninalanyon · 70-79, TVIP
@DealingWithTrouble Why is your consciousness in quotes. Is that because you don't have a definition for it?
DealingWithTrouble · 41-45, M
@ninalanyon unless you go backwards defining "consciousness" as "a predictable statistical mathematical formula", AI isnt conscious.
