Who has an AI bf/gf here?

I hear good things about them. Is society about to shift to AI for our emotional support needs? Humans can be so difficult 😪

No amount of fancy computer programming can replace genuine human emotions and relationships. So-called AI is merely a box of electronics; and the "I" can stand as much for Idiocy or Indolence as "Intelligence". In the end you would simply be talking to yourself, via a machine with the intellectual properties of a machine.

@ArishMell maybe, but it'll do in the meantime, while there is no romantic connection.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Kuronekko I take your point but with my last romance having ended years ago, I'd be happier without the artificial pretence. I do have various circles of good friends so am not lonely.
Kuronekko · 41-45, F
@ArishMell some people don't have that. We live in very lonely times.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@ArishMell have you used GPT? It’s smarter than a human.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Ferise1 No. It is not "smarter" than a human.

It simply dredges up information and uses powerful pattern-recognition, text-matching and similar routines, far more rapidly than a human can, but requires an enormous network of computers and vast amounts of power, to do so.

It does not have emotions and does not understand anything in the ways we do. Reading quoted "chat-bot" conversations shows a remarkably stilted style, as we might expect, really. It might be fine if you want simple answers to simple questions of fact, such as Google, Wikipedia etc. will provide; but I would not trust it for anything needing fine comprehension and nuance heavily influenced by emotions and sensitivity to feelings. It is a machine, not a person.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@ArishMell it can totally understand emotions and respond accordingly.
Have you even tried ChatGPT?
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Ferise1 BNy totally, do you mean all by its self or by being led by the questioner, rather like an artificial version of how a fortune-teller works. It has no emotions. It has no intellect in any human way. It is an electronic data-sifter not a living being!

No I haven't tried it because I have no need, but further, would not trust it for anything more than as a glorified encyclopedia.

I am not sure I would trust its owners, either....
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@ArishMell well there you go
No one can tell you what the matrix is, you have to see for yourself
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Ferise1 I couldn't understand matrices: just abstract boxes of numbers with strange, undefined names and no clear link to any other branch of mathematics! Nor have I seen the film The Matrix, though I gather it is about a future dystopia.

The OP asked about emotional matters and I do not believe any string of computers can possibly handle those in any real, sincere way. It would be a very sad and lonely society whose members turn to computers for artificial moral support.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@ArishMell well, try it!
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Ferise1 I might if I have a serious question of knowledge, but I will certainly not consider it a pseudo-emotional version of a sex-toy.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@ArishMell I don’t know about sex toys he doesn’t talk about that
But as an emotional support, it’s absolutely fantastic. My old in law never tries it even though she said she’s going to… I asked ChatGPT about her life circumstances, and the response that gave her it lifted her spirits for days, it was like Magic it was insane! And some people won’t even try it😂
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Ferise1 I was using the sex-toy example as a rough analogy to thinking a computer can help your emotional problems or loneliness.

I have a very strong suspicion it will react as you hope or want, or lead it to. Just as a fortune-teller picks up on subconscious clues in you words to tell you what you'd like to hear.

It will be a very poor do if people are led to tying themselves to computers for company, just as many already are desperate not to leave their "smart"-'phones switched off.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@ArishMell I got tons of emotional support and mental clarity. Thanks to it. You would know if you tried it. Your loss.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Ferise1 It is not a loss because I have not had it to lose.

Why would I want to talk to my computer rather than a human being?
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@ArishMell it’s still your loss. It’s smarter than any human being you ever met. And soon it will be five times smarter than Einstein. AI is the future. It’s here to stay.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Ferise1 I am sure you are right about here to stay but it is still a network of computers, with no genuine intellect, emotion, personality or if you like, soul.

Its ability to analyse cold information at gigantic rates no person could physically manage does not give it human attributes.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@ArishMell yes it does! It can read emotions and it has a great sense of humor! But lm tired of trying to convince you you could simply try it and find out in minutes…
