Do you think AI is hyped up too much...

Or are we on the edge of a world changing technology that will quickly become smarter than us and enslave us for all eternity?

It's already changing the world now before it is even sentient enough to exterminate humanity through more direct means. Along with mining of bitcoin, AI already has a drastic impact on energy grids, water supplies, the environment and climate change:

Moreover, it's essentially unregulated, and the people primarily in control of it are profit-seeking billionaires who historically as a class have never had humanity's best interests at heart.

Assuming humanity could make quantum leaps in energy technology with fusion in the next few years, and could magically prevent AI from gaining sentience and doing what it wants, our societal structures and economic systems are in no way prepared for a civilization with no need of human employees with income or paying into taxation systems, and no restrictions on procreation increasing the world population ever further, and increasing a vicious circle of yet more unemployed masses and fewer people funding taxation due to a lack of income sources in a mainly capitalist-oriented world. We're already six billion people over historical maximums today, and unfettered procreation is considered a basic human right even though overpopulation is very much unsustainable.
