My big toe really hurts i think it's gout

PinkFloydTheWall · 36-40, M
I have gout too, mostly in my feet. For years, doctors chalked it up to "bad fitting shoes" and "arthritis". For about two years, I was dating a girl that would cook these crazy double patty (each patty was an inch thick) cheeseburgers and gradually I was putting on weight. I had my first flare up in summer of 2012, I was on crutches. It got so bad in 2019 that a foot doc figured it out. I'm on a single tablet daily of allopurinol (300 mg) and when I have a flare up (ultra rare now, even when I do they're mild) I take indomethacin and knocks it down in less than 24 hours. This all happens in the kidneys, have to flush it out with water. Tart cherry pills help too. Purines from meat, purines to uric acid, when you sleep heart beat carries uric acid to extremities that form crystals in joints, body sees those crystals as foreign matter and cause fever in the joint and attack it causing gouty arthritis. Feels like someone drives a railroad spike in the joint and can't use it.

Foot pain can be unbearable at times. Fortunately, there are medications that can be prescribed to manage gout. An elderly relative of mine suffers from gout, and is on medication. In my own case (osteoarthritis), surgery is my only option, according to the podiatrist. And even that will not completely remedy the situation. Doc says the condition is likely to return within 3-5 years, at which point another surgery would be necessary, and so on.

A simple blood test checking the uric acid level can confirm or negate your diagnosis.

@Bify123 Certain foods can bring it on. Beef. Mushrooms. Broccoli. To name a few.

@SW-User that's how I managed it but apparently drug treatment works

@kwood1 I take Allopurinol daily to manage the gout and Colchicine when I have a gout flare-up. The worst of all the inflamed joints is my finger on my right hand. I can't close it to make a fist. Flare-up or not. And my Uric acid tests in range other than during flare-ups.

Oh yeah. That def looks like gout. Something that helps is to drink water until you are sick of it. It helps to dissolve the crystals back into the blood and flush the kidneys.

@Renaci I've been fortunate enough to never have that degree of inflammation or swelling. And I drink to where I am called camel.
