I Go Barefoot to the Store

I just got back from a quick run to the grocery store near us. I got to the check out and the lady in front of me turned and asked if I went barefoot all the time. I told her as much as possible. I was also wearing my Barefoot Campus Outfitter shirt. She told me she saw me come in the other day (what are the odds of that), and saw that I was barefoot then as well. She told me she thought I looked like a nice guy, that I could certainly afford shoes, but thought it was interesting that I was barefoot. She said she just doesn't see that anywhere. I told her I thought it was sad because when I was a kid, as soon as the weather got warm, we ditched our shoes and went barefoot EVERYWHERE. She said she likes it and misses it. Maybe she'll give it a try and go barefoot more this spring and summer. And maybe she'll let her kids go barefoot too!

Most stores and restaurants where I live are no shoes no shirt no service. I love walking outside in the summer barefoot and I always kick my shoes off and drive barefoot too.

@Fungirlmmm: Most of those stores do that for liability purposes. It's a hold over from the 60's/70's when McDonalds wanted to keep the "hippies" out of their place. I rarely get confronted any more. I think most places covet my money more than my lack of shoes. Oh sure, there's always some rogue busybody who thinks they know it all, but I thank them for their concern and go on about my business. That usually throws them off.

@barefootnude: Hi friend!

Are you sure they do it for liability reasons? I bet most don't even know why they have a NSNSNS sign posted! I bet they don't have ANY reason for posting it.

@Nytro44: You're probably right, but it's always easy to fall back on something even quasi-legal. It's such a foreign idea for most people (which is sad) that they don't know what to do when they see me barefoot.

@barefootnude: I did my first barefoot jog around my neighborhood this morning. It's just been a little too cool for me to jog early in the mornings here, so I've been wearing a pair of my FiveFingers and going to the treadmill at the Y. This morning it was 68 and clear at 5:15, so out I went! I limited my distance to 1.5 miles, since it was my first barefoot jog of the season. I've been walking a lot barefoot, but jogging puts more pressure on the bottoms of your feet. I'll get my pads toughened up in a few days though.

@Nytro44: That's great! I had to take a break from the jogging for a while because of some unexplained knee issues. Those seem to have resolved themselves. Now that it's warming up, we're walking more, and of course I'm doing those walks barefoot. I've also been very busy so that has eaten into the time I can exercise as well.

I'm working back into it, and I may start doing some of the morning walk as a run, and do it barefoot.

@Fungirlmmm I was always barefoot growing up. I still am barefoot most of the time
