Women, how would you accept someone you know to get your attention when passing by?

At work I do know a female co-worker who I talked to now and then, and once when I was around her workplace, she made me notice her by winking into my direction. While my way of making someone notice me is looking at them, also because in some cases I just mistook strangers for people I knew.

In case of that female co-worker I looked at her for a bit (from a bit more afar) when passing by, which made her smile at me. The tricky thing here is though that people do react that way with me even if I do not know them (or at least don't remember so). I do know that this could be simple politeness, but personally I feel disappointed if not irritated in case someone just forgot about me after not having seen each other for quite some time.

But how would I know now if my staring would more likely cause someone usually known to me would rather be polite than their winking would be? If that staring wouldn't just make them feel uncomfortable..
