I Am An Atheist

"Atheism is a religion like off is a TV channel, and bald is a hair colour." - Hemant Mehta

I wonder if the people who think atheism is a religion actually do just sit in front of a television, eating popcorn, enjoying the latest show on the Off channel.

Atheism is not a religion but, it is a belief. And just like every belief, it is only valid to the believer.
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@room101 a lack of evidence isn't a belief nor an alternative fact.

@EuphoricTurtle
Neither of us can prove our respective positions.
Neither of us can disprove the others position.
Ergo, both positions are beliefs.

The lack of evidence hits both sides.

@room101

1. there's no proof that gods exist
2. there's no proof that gods don't exist
3. there's no compelling necessity to postulate the existence of gods... and the postulation explains nothing (it merely explains everything away)
4. therefore I have no gods (I'm an agnostic atheist)

Can you identify any beliefs in there?
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@room101 what you're describing is solipsism
Solipsism (/ˈsɒlᵻpsɪzəm/ (About this sound listen); from Latin solus, meaning 'alone', and ipse, meaning 'self')[1] is the philosophical idea that only one's own mind is sure to exist. As an epistemological position, solipsism holds that knowledge of anything outside one's own mind is unsure; the external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist outside the mind. As a metaphysical position, solipsism goes further to the conclusion that the world and other minds do not exist.
@EuphoricTurtle sounds very much like Plato's theory of forms and his cave analogy.

I'm not stating that my position is sure. In fact, I'm stating the opposite. Hence my use of the word "belief".

Are you stating that your position is sure?
room101 · 51-55, M
@newjaninev2
points 1. and 2. are repeats of what I've just said.
Point 3. is debatable.
Point 4. answers your question because it states your position based on your belief that you "have no gods".

Whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.

@newjaninev2 is this a new game that I've not heard of?
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@room101 My position is true . There is NO evidence for the existence of any deity.
room101 · 51-55, M
@EuphoricTurtle if your position is true then you must be able to provide evidence that refutes, definitively, the existence of a deity.

Can you do that?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@room101 Point 3 is the heart of the matter... unless someone can demonstrate such a compelling necessity.

people are so used to arguing in terms of beliefs, that they overlook that the postulation is trivial, and can be discarded without loss.

I've quite certain that I have no Y chromosome, no Maserati in my garage, no elephants in my lounge, no... well, you get the idea.

How do those things result in a 'position'?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@newjaninev2 and how does any of it make atheism a belief?
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@room101 My position is true. This is my position. (It's pretty self explanatory)
There is NO evidence for the existence of any deity, therefore I do not believe in a deity or follow any religion
@EuphoricTurtle very bad word play I'm afraid.

Come on guys, I was expecting something far more challenging than this
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@room101 and yet, your unsupported claim is not compelling
room101 · 51-55, M
@newjaninev2 yeah, you're going to have to show me where I've made a claim. Supported and compelling or otherwise.
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@newjaninev2 You talk of value and need, but those are not compelling necessities. They are more akin to personal indulgences.

Why formulate fatuous postulations?
Surely we all have better things to do!
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@room101
You see no value, no need, no necessity in believing in a god or gods. I disagree with every fiber of my being
So, you can identify a (compelling?) necessity for believing in a god or gods?

Interesting claim...
room101 · 51-55, M
@newjaninev2 sorry, I tried to edit my post because I spotted a typo and ended up deleting it. As best as I can remember:

Come on Janine, I expected better analogies from you. You may not remember but, we went round this merry-go-round many times on EP.

You say that there is no value, no need, no necessity for a god or gods. I disagree with every fibre of my being. Now what?
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@room101 No, I'm saying there is no compelling necessity to postulate the existence of gods
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@newjaninev2 no Maserati, no elephant, no proof either way, no compelling necessity... no belief required.
room101 · 51-55, M
@newjaninev2 no compelling necessity for having a Maserati and an elephant???? Are you quite sure about that?
room101 · 51-55, M
@newjaninev2 "Why formulate fatuous postulations? Surely we all have better things to do!"

And yet here you are.

These postulations may be fatuous to you but they are not to me. To me, they give life meaning and purpose. Why is that such an issue for you?
