Many atheists were raised as Christians and later rejected the faith and the stories.
Many atheists meet religious people who try to convert them. Reading their holy texts is one way to find out what it is that they are choosing or rejecting.
Understanding the Bible is a useful way to understand countless Western references, beliefs and cultural practices - which helps with living in the midst of believers.

The thing is, with the use of the word "true", there is an automatic sorting process. If a member (a convert or someone born into the Born Again movement) chose to leave, those left behind would automatically assume that in some way their heart wasn't true to Jesus.
But people can and do leave all kinds of movements for all sorts of reasons - and often it's what they need to do in order to be true to themselves.
I know that grieves the people who view themselves as the true believers - but every other group also believes they have the truth, and they are just as sincere.
