I Am An Atheist

I have a very odd view of religion, I think. I believe that anyone can choose to believe whatever they like, but I also wish I was religious. No, really. As much as I love the fact that I can exist wthout the need for religion, life would just be so much easier with faith. What happens after death? How was the Universe made? What is the meaning of life? religion has an answer. As much as I don't think those answers are correct, if I was religious, at least I'd have answers. Life would require so much less effort. And 100% less existential crises.

Whatever, I guess atheism is handy. I'm good with what I believe, and even though I don't have the answers, at least I know I don't have the wrong ones.

Edit: Bear in mind, everyone, that this is just the rant of a tired person who has random thoughts. Please please please don't take what I'm saying too seriously, I am perfectly aware that there are holes in my argument and I don't think this post accurately represents my opinions, but I've decided to not delete it because it does in some way reflect some of my opinions and is important to truly understand some of the comments and the edits too. I would like to make some amendments however.

1) I understand faith is not a choice. Bad choice of words, really. What I meant was that I accept that anyone is allowed to believe what they believe.

2) I understand that people who are religious can have issues with their faith throughout their lives, my point was more that there are answers that are there, rather than there being no answers at all.

Having had time to think about this some more since posting, I think that it's important to mention that atheism isn't a belief in specific things like in a religion, it is simply the lack of belief in God. Not all atheists believe in the Big Bang Theory and Evolution, but that doesn't mean they're not atheists.

One final thing, in response to the guy that said "It is easier to believe oneself a god, than to believe in a god." in the comments. No. Just no. Either you're joking(please please let it be that) or you have absolutely no understanding of what atheism is. Also, in future, capitalise God.

I so agree with your position that it would be easier to 'believe' - wayyyy less hassle.

What I can't agree with is someone 'choosing to believe whatever they wish.' If we could choose, you and I could take the easier route. What we believe is what we believe - I don't think we have that much choice.

@diablo, we definitely know about NDT here, and I at least know Bill Nye. Also, I'm assuming you deliberately wrote Sir Richard instead of Sir David Attenborough. Richard was in fact Baron, not Sir, and died in 2014. (I'm such a nerd.)

@diablo I thought we'd be great friends the minute you mentioned Doctor Who, but now that Carl Sagan reference... We will be unstoppable.

I think you are making incorrect assumptions about a few things. For one thing, even religious people have crises of faith. The intelligent, thinking ones do, for sure. Not all religious people are so sure of anything. That's why it's called faith. And lastly, you think you don't have the wrong answers, but what if, just possibly, you are wrong about atheism being the truth?
Not saying you are. I'm kind of an agnostic, leaning towards atheism, but, I'm just saying, how can we be so sure we are right?

I updated the post to make it more reflective of my opinions. Still is far from perfect, however. Feel free to criticize further.

@Chloe Definitely! Do you also know who Neil Degrasse Tyson and Bill Nye are? Sort of like your Brian Cox or James Burke. Bill and NDT ara huge in a certain country with many states ;) but I don't know if they have the same fame across the pond.

Not related to science, but how about Sir Richard A. turning 90 recently??? So awesome!! Just like your fellow countrywoman Jane Goodall, he's done so much for animals over the years.

@Chloe You are indeed correct about life and asked some of the most important questions ever asked (and will be asked). Being a diablo, I guess you know how I stand on religion. :P All joking aside, I do respect all of them and realize that faith is what helps countless humans around our Pale Blue Dot (as the late-great Carl Sagan deemed it) make it through the day.

In some ways, facing up to the difficult questions (even if you never find an answer) permits you more spiritual growth than just choosing a worldview where the answers are given and you never have to think. The truth is difficult but it's worthwhile spending a lifetime pursuing it.

Unfortunately, I do tend to get the Attenborough Bros names mixed up. Richard was Baron, eh? "I don't know that!" (Monty Python and Holy Grail ref.) :D
Nyah, you're so not a nerd for knowing trivia.

I guess my response WAS a critique of sorts, wasn't it. Sorry bout that.
RoboChloe · 26-30, F
No problem at all, @marvingaye, I love criticism. It helps me improve.

It is easier to believe oneself a god, than to believe in a god.
