Today's date in the history of astronomy and space exploration

On March 29, 1974, the spacecraft Mariner 10 flew past the planet Mercury and sent back the first close-up pictures of the planet. As it turns out, Mercury looks a lot like the Moon.

That's incredible, I thought this was an unexplored face of the moon in black and white.
Its appearance is far different than I expected for Mercury.
