I Don't Believe In Astrology

On April 16, 1968, an ad appeared in a Paris newspaper offering a free 10-page personalized horoscope and personality profile to the paper's readers. All they had to do was send in their name, address, date and place of birth, and then provide feedback on the accuracy of their individual charts.

150 people of various astrological signs responded to the ad.

How accurate did the respondents believe their reading was after viewing it?

A whopping 94% reported that their horoscope was either “very accurate” or “extremely accurate”.

What they didn't know is that everyone who replied to the ad received the exact same chart.

Another thing they didn't know is that the horoscope was that of lifelong criminal and serial killer Marcel Petiot, who was convicted of murdering 26 people and suspected of murdering a total of 60 or more individuals.

The person who had the ad placed in the newspaper was French psychologist and statistician Michel Gauquelin. It was one of several tests concerning astrology that he and his wife Francoise conducted.

In an earlier experiment, Gauquelin asked a "professional" astrologer to cast a horoscope for him, but provided another individual's birthdate instead of his own.

The reading was very positive:

"[His] instinctive warmth is allied with intellect and wit ... He is endowed with a moral sense which is comforting - that of a worthy, right-thinking citizen ... [whose] life finds expression in total devotion to others ..."

The birthdate and other info provided by Gauquelin was that of the aforementioned serial killer, Marcel Petiot.

I think astrology is for entertainment purposes only, but I still laugh when I read traits that are so very me (Aries) or so very the people who surround me (mostly Geminis). ;) ♈️♊️
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@ChampagneOnIce I do enjoy it as entertainment, but I really can't take it too seriously even though some of the traits commonly listed for Virgos do fit me.
Yeah, but there must be a reason that a man I once loved dearly, my closest friends, and a sibling who tried to destroy me are all Virgos. 😏
@SW-User I kid. The OP is both a friend and a Virgo. 😅

@bijouxbroussard haha awesome! I'm a virgo too 😊
@SW-User Very cool. 👍🏽

So much for astrology
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@GJOFJ3 Right. It's okay to indulge in it for fun, but I'd never rely on it when making any major decisions.

@Rutterman That's what i think too!

Ha, interesting.
All the respondents believed the reading was 'very accurate' or 'extremely accurate' for them, because most human traits, emotions, behaviors are common for us all, to varying degrees, me thinks.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Magenta I think so too. And if a personality description is vague and general enough, it very likely would apply to a broad range of people
Magenta · F
@Rutterman Exactly. :-)

I don't know?!🤔In high school I used to write the astrology column and was correct most the time in guessing what star sign a person was. I'm on the cusp between Virgo and Libra.⭐️ Interesting article. I still think there is something to it all.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@Peaches Very glad you found this interesting, Pam, and appreciate your comments.

Others do share your view. All I can say is that people probably will continue to disagree about the validity of astrology for many years to come.

Lol same as the placebo pill 💊.... “take this it will heal everything” 🙄
Rutterman · 46-50, M
@SW-User Yes, I think it's kind of like that.

There were thirteen zodiac signs in the original astrological charts. l guess the "accuracy" of the "science" is unaffected by the dropping of Ophiucus and the affects of zodiacal precession since the Summerarian agronomists first formulated the hypothesis 7000 years ago.
