Spare any tips for a beginner?

I got to get to painting this bad boi.
But I'm a first timer and I know a few of you are experienced in painting miniatures.

Also, if you can name me this ship, you deserve best comment

USS Defiant.

Take even more time painting it then putting it together. It takes patience.

@caPnAhab to give you an idea just how important this two parter is. In highschool they actually showed it in creative writing class.

@DeWayfarer interesting. In what context would you watch it in school?

@caPnAhab edited previous. Yet creative writing.

Don't want to give away the plot. 😊

I saw a great tip on painting miniatures- paint with a black wash first, and wipe it off while its still wet.

What happens is the black stays in all the crevices, and adds more dimension.
Also, apparently black is a good primer colour for metalics.

@OogieBoogie Thats a really good tip. Actually, I've seen that done before but the figure was pre-painted.

So then, does is absolutely have to be applied first?
