I always love the paintings by these Victorian classicists and particularly Alma-Tadema. They are designed to be erotic in a slightly prudish way and I think he generally succeeds in this aim here. It is the way in which she looks vulnerable - either asleep or drunk (not quite sure which) and therefore a bit available. The slightly diaphanous clothing is also designed to be tempting.

I am borderline shocked. Alma-Tadema is one of my favorites--have multiple framed prints on my walls. However, I would day "idealized" rather than "prudish." And I'm sure you've read the recent controversy about Michelangelo's David being "pornographic."
