This type of Victorian nude by Frederic Leighton was satirised by Gilbert:

They wear little underclothing, scarcely anything or nothing
And their dress of shiny silk is quite transparent in design
Well, in fact in summer weather something like the altogether
And there I rather fancy I shall have to draw the line

@peterlee I love Utopia - especially the minstrel song although some of the satire in that is probably lost on a modern audience.

With a few cuts it should have been a success.

But costly to perform.
Costume changes.

@peterlee Didn’t Gilbert pad it out to give Nancy MacIntosh a bigger role?

@JoeXP Yes, and she was not a good actress either. Sullivan did not think much of her singing.
But I like the songs at the beginning of the second act.

It’s the dreary contralto I can’t stand.
