More skull art by me!!

I stained a coyote skull using a walnut shell and coffee dye I made myself. I added abalone, crushed seashells, and iron pyrite to the skull. Then mounted it to the crescent wallhanging. The crescent is decorated with scavenged bones, moss, pine cones, mushroom, semi precious stones, seashells, freshwater pearls and more!!

Ragnar Lothbrok approves. lol
I made a wood dye myself actually using vinegar and steel wool added a little coffee to it as well. It turned out a warm gray.

@canusernamebemyusername whoa 🤯 sounds so awesome!! Maybe I’ll try that with some bones 🦴 🤔

I also want to try dying with indigo because it leaves such a beautiful brilliant blue color. I’ve seen some people do bone staining with it and it comes out amazing!!
@SW-User I actually have some old indigo root somewhere but I never could get it to take to cloth. Which was most likely a cloth or mordant issue. But it is a very pretty blue:)
I also saw some wood workers use red onions to make a dye. It also depends on the wood too. Some can come out blotchy just due to grain and density of the wood. Oak tends to be a very good wood for dying though. It's very consistent. Pine is I have found temperamental. Plus it has a underlying yellow tone that can tint a dye.

@canusernamebemyusername i’ve heard about using onion skins before but I didn’t realize people were using these techniques on wood as well!!

There are also mushrooms that people use for dyes as well. They’re called dyer’s polypore. I dyed a scarf once with some
@SW-User I'd never heard of the mushrooms. The outcomes remind me of turmeric dyes. At least the yellow ones. Cook def know about turmeric staining stuff. lol
But yeah I was wanting something less toxic than a commercial dye so I tried learning some more organic ways of staining with just stuff I found around the house.

@canusernamebemyusername yes 🙌 I’m all about that too! Less toxic and more organic!! Awesome 👏
@SW-User I use enough chemicals in life as it is:P So if I can find something just as good but less harmful I'll use that.
