The unintended consequences

... of building a railway station.

Back in the 19th century two railway companies decided to build a new station Waterloo Junction (now East) in London. This would enable trains running on a loop service between Charing Cross and Cannon Street to link with trains terminating at Waterloo.

I read an article about it recently and one unintended consequence was that the loop service had been used by prostitutes to entertain clients in comfort of a compartment for a nominal fare. But the new station in the line meant they were frequently interrupted and so had to move business elsewhere back on less comfy streets.

I just found it all rather funny.

Train companies were really annoying even in those days, then...

"Allo darling, fancy a tuppenny ride?"
Yeah, yeah, I can see that working. Y'know I'm wasted on here I should be writing scripts for TV and film.

Charing Cross to Canon Street is quite a short journey, even without stops 😆
