is there any signs to spot if you have a faulty dvd player

i recently purchased a dvd player, i haven't opened it yet but just wondered are there any signs to spot that it's faulty? anyone techy enough to know?

@Northwest i know yes, they still sell dvd players,i value them so much....i haven't opened the dvd player yet.
