Light dies because he revealed he was kira to his dad and the other cops after he thought he wrote their names in the death note but N switched the notebooks.

@zanewin: wow that's it? I thought light told everyone he's Kira but then that ghost thing got another person to write down names so in the end they don't suspect Light anymore.
