My main issue with anime.

@BlueVeins what was horrendous about it? I think it had more fan service than I realized but I was absorbed in the story, the most risque thing I can think of was Kirito seeing Silica's panties, but I don't think they even showed it

Tame compared to most anime with fan service, which I guess makes her point

@th3r0n In terms of sex stuff, the way they shot the scenes of that one dude sexually assaulting Asuna was sexual in an extremely uncomfortable way. Like you can have a scene that's supposed to be horrifying and rapey or you can have a scene that's supposed to turn the audience on... but you can't do both. Unless you're doing rape porn I guess, but you can't just throw rape porn in a TV show casually. And then they have the tentacle monsters abuse her and it's not treated at all with the gravity it should be. It's not good.

And the writing was genuinely unwatchable past episode 5 or so. Kirito and Asuna were both massive mary sues, and yui was possibly even worse. There was never any nuance to their relationship, just picture perfect marriage despite them being teenagers. The way the rest of the people in the simulation act is not realistic; they get pissy towards the strongest potential allies they have despite being in a death game where they can die. It's just garbage. The animation is great but that is not enough to carry a poorly-written story.
