I think kazu started this romance as a jerk but in a subversion of what happens in real life with assholes he STARTED OFF as a jerk to chizu and slowly started treating her better as he fell in love with her.
I will give you that he was a complete asshole and monster to her at first, he does start treating her better though. I read the manga. in real life men make the mistake of seeing girls date assholes and conclude girls must just like men who treat them like shit but it's more like Jekyl and Hyde are realities women have to contend with where the assholes have dual personalities and start their relationships off flirty and on a love bombing charm offensive and then slowly isolate the girl and start threatening her and turning into control freaks.
Women don't pick assholes, assholes pretend to be nice guys at first and then turn into jerks.
