The Queen is still the head of state in my husband's country but they are not in Africa. They are Caribbean.
I have a hard time understanding the way that it works because I haven't looked that deeply into it and as an American its a bit confusing.
The UK government dosen't do jack for them and they gained independence 30 years ago.
Their banana republic government is in a shambles.
They don't even get good exporting contracts to the UK as they used to for their fruits.

@REMsleep are they an overseas territory, in which case the UK government does have responsibility, or is it now independent. If fully independent then UK government has no responsibility etc, why should it there would be no tax revenue to them?

@OldBrit Yes Im all with you but what is the point of keeping the Queen as your "Head of State" then?
They are a commonwealth realm state.
They are fully Independent but understand that the Queen technically is the ceremonial head of state.
They have some free and tax free lands in the country and when they come visit a very big deal is made of it with lots of fanfare at the expense to the locals.
Its supposed to show strong political ties and basically say that in any major matter they will support the Queen but I don't get the point of this.

@OldBrit Yes but unfortunately my husband's country is so tiny they can't be a true source of workers and they do produce loads of bananas but with black fungus taking over the common bananas world wide their country is too small to rotate fields to try to hold that fungus down.
Uk is now getting most bananas from Central America which has larger fields.
My husband's country is a literal shit show.

@REMsleep

There are approx. ten Caribbean countries which are in the British Commonwealth. The Queen is their Head of State but, she appoints a Governor General who acts as her representative.

However, this role (just like the Queen's role in general) is largely ceremonial and has negligible impact on the running of the country. For example, Jamaica is in the Commonwealth so, it has a Governor General. It is also fully independent and has its own Parliament and its own duly elected Prime Minister.
