I'd Rather Get To Know You Than Small Talk

I hate small talk. I find it difficult to keep thinking of "stuff" to talk about. Constant questioning and chatting is enough to drive me absolutely insane. I fear that I will say something ignorant or tactless if I talk too much. I feel put on the spot if people ask me too many questions.

For this reason ( and other reasons I won't bore you with ) I do not enjoy parties or social gatherings. I will never be the sort of person who will add life to a dinner party. I have never been able to regale people with entertaining, fascinating stories. I also have never been good at telling jokes or making people laugh. I have never been able to think of witty responses to things people say to me. I am extremely awkward and uncomfortable in these kinds of social interactions. Further, these activities don't interest me or have any appeal to me.

However, I am not a complete antisocial snob. I am interested in learning about people and hearing their life stories. I always pay attention and remember what people share with me about themselves. Many people are amazed when I can recall so many details about their lives. They don't realize that I pay attention and have a good memory. I would actually much rather listen to your life story than tell you mine ( the latter is incredibly dull and depressing ).

I tend to ask people a lot of questions. My intention is never to embarrass people or put them on the spot. It comes out of what I refer to as respectful curiosity. I am genuinely interested, and I won't judge you. If there is something you would rather not discuss, then I will respect that and not continue to press the issue.

The reason I don't like to be around people who ask me a lot of questions is most people use my answers as a basis to lecture me or give me a lot of annoying unsolicited advice. I think the main reason I despise small talk is that I feel put on the spot.

You sound just like I do. I enjoy conversations as long as it isn't something I'm not interested in or something I don't know anything about. I hate crowds. I enjoy being with a person by myself. I do not like to be around people who try to be stand up comics. I enjoy getting to know people. I hate small talk. I hate it when people try to be funny. I like people who respect the way a person is and their lifestyle. I like people who respect and accept what a person believes. I don't want a person to try and be something or someone they are not.
