Do you think joking at someone else’s expense is funny?

I met a new acquaintance and their way of joking is making rude comments. Ordered a decaf coffee and the first joke was, “yeah you don’t need any more caffeine”. Second joke was a garbage truck drove by the cafe and I asked, “what’s that smell”, they then replied with, “YOU”! Looking back it was funny, but in the moment I was definitely not laughing. Keep in mind the is only the second time I’ve hung out with this person.

Rarely. There is a usually a pretty big discernable difference between good-natured "joking" among people, and someone simply being obnoxious.
@Piper strongly agree

I can still hear my long dead mother saying, "We're not laughing at you, we're laughing WITH you," while I was crying.
@BigBulge awwww!! 🫂

@BigBulge I had the same mother. Her humor was never funny to me.

These people have no place in my life. Seriously, I grew up with those kind of backhanded comments and have little tolerance for them now.
@Peapod it does get old fast! People have lost the art of “reading the room”. If people aren’t laughing, then check yourself!

I’ve got an acquaintance who is the same. It’s sort of sad but I avoid her now mostly because it just gets on my nerves.
@SW-User I’m glad you commented. At first I thought maybe I was being too sensitive, but it just doesn’t feel that great. She’s constantly saying, “I’m joking, I’m joking” and part of me wants to say, “Hun- if you see me not laughing and constantly find yourself having to explain that you’re joking, then what does that tell you? You’re not funny!”.

@DecafD some people can’t communicate properly and it’s their way. I can appreciate our differences but it doesn’t mean I have to put up with that crap.
@SW-User exactly! Kindness is universal, yet people can be so unkind in how they choose to communicate. I don’t get it!
