Why is it "infamous"? I assume you are simply quoting a widespread impression.

I can see it's not something to take lightly, especially in high water, but it looks really beautiful, and interesting geologically.

@ArishMell I should have said "Famous" Since Canyoneers from around the world come to Utah to do the Top Down route

And yes, people die during floods. The first permit we had was cancelled due to heavy rains north of there.
