I Live In An Apartment

As most of my friends here know, I'm living in Washington DC for about 16 months as I complete my master's degree. Well while I'm here, I'm living in a second floor corner apartment in the Georgetown neighborhood of the city. It's not large, basically two rooms, and it came furnished.

The main room has a small kitchenette in one corner and a living/dining area filling out the rest of the room. There's a futon in place of a couch and I basically use it as my bed. There is a bedroom that came with a bed, but I've stored that with the landlord and use the bedroom as a makeshift exercise area for my taekwondo.

But back in the main room, there is one thing that is quite curious. It's an turntable with an amplifier. The landlord said it is not his and the Lieutenant that I'm subletting from said it was there when he arrived a year and a half ago. So some previous tenant evidently donated it to the apartment furnishings.

Well, I recently went back home for a weekend to pick up some more stuff including winter clothes that I would need for my sixteen months here. While home I mentioned the turntable; it really is quite the novelty item for this digital girl. Upon hearing of my find, my dad ran to the basement and put together a milk crate full of old vinyl albums for me to listen to. I've finally pulled it out and began exploring this new way to listen to music!!

The first album I pulled out was "Hotel California" by, of course, The Eagles. The title track is a classic and I've heard it a million times and love it. But, being an album and not my Spotify feed, the Eagles continued on with songs I had NOT heard. Loved these two:

and ...

So then I continued going through his crate of music and I came across Eric Clapton "Unplugged". Liked the whole side 1, but came to "Tears from Heaven" and just loved it. I was chatting with my good friend @TexChik and she told me the story of how and why he came to write that song 😢 ... so sad ...

Anyway, I'm just getting settled nicely here in Washington and discovering a new (old) way to enjoy music. That's all for now! ;)

I think it's great that you embraced the opportunity to try it out. And that you are enjoying it

If it was me though...I'd have probably asked if it could be put in storage or found it a new home with someone who appreciates vinyl more then I do. It's less of a novelty for me because my dad had records and a record player, and I had my own fisherprice kid's toy that sort of worked liked a record player (most amazing toy ever btw-but It meant I grew out of a fascination with records when I discovered cassette tapes and cd players as a kid. )
I should ask my parents if they still have this toy, because I think the going rate is like 50 dollars for it. And well it should...they don't make a kid's toy like that anymore. (that makes me sound old 🙄)

And once Ipods came out, I never looked back. The perfect portable thing when you need music when hanging out with friends, exercising, and hey, if you need an impromptu dance party, or have a spontaneous unplanned date that goes really well...your ipod has it covered with all your different playlists every single time. :)

Live music is the best experience, but if I have to pick between machines?
Convenience and the lack of "storing physical stuff" will probably always beat quality for me. I've been picked on by musician friends a few times over that...but there it is. lol

p.s. If you plan on keeping the record player during your stay in that apartment. You should consider hanging a velvet painting by your record player...just saying...

btw...I love that you use the bedroom as your tkd area. I have an area in my apartment with those foam puzzle tiles that interlock (though those have cons, I'm always paranoid about sweat getting underneath and cleaning/sanitizing them and underneath them) and that is like my way of having a designated exercise area where I store everything for that and work out .

@Scribbles Oh don't worry, this digital girl is not switching to vinyl any time soon. It was my dad's idea to bring some of his old records down with me to try it out, and then he kept bugging me asking if I had. So now I have. But for all the reasons you mentioned, I'll stick to my phone for music.

And yeah, a dedicated space was important to me. Besides, after living on my boat for two summers, I'm used to small spaces. As small as my apartment is, it is more than enough for me. :)

@Scribbles PS: Nice toy. I don't recall ever having one of those but it looks cool.
Fangirlsarah1996 · 26-30, F
Sounds like you're getting on just fine <3
Fangirlsarah1996 · 26-30, F
@sarabee1995 Tbf I was...it'd look so cute on your naked form...😏

But around your wrists? My oh my...
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Fangirlsarah1996 Yeah yeah, so you say!

There has been quite the resurgence of vinyl on this side of the pond. There are two things that new users of the medium say which always make me chuckle a bit.

1. WOW! The music sounds so much better, so much more atmospheric and like "real".
2. Basically what you've said above about discovering new material by a given musician.

And yeah, the backstory of Tears In Heaven is tragic.

@sarabee1995 😂😂😂
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@room101 It's true though. I can't carry a tune at all and the finer points of music appreciation are really lost on me. 🤷‍♀️
room101 · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995 As you know, I've been surrounded by musicians for nearly all of my life. But, I can't play a note on any instrument and, I can barely manage to sing Happy Birthday. OK, I'm not that bad but you get the picture.

The point is that, despite my very real musical handicaps, I love music, I love listening to it and, I love being around musicians. And yeah, when they start going into the "finer points of music appreciation" they may as well be talking in Swahili.

BUT, I can tell the difference between a good recording played on a good sound system and a digital download played on a telephone.

Come on kiddo, make full use of the bit of kit that has found its way into your possession and listen. Above all.......ENJOY 🎶💃🕺🤗

All great classics. I can't listen to the song about Conor Clapton without crying. I read recently that Eric Clapton held a great deal of regret for not being more a part of his son's life. :(
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Fungirlmmm I knew nothing about any of it until this evening.

You are rediscovering old technology.
I retrieved a 45 RPM RCA Victor record player from the recycle bin at my job in Indianapolis. It is funny what can make you feel settled but I can’t imagine living without it. It sounds like your Dad has excellent taste in music and you get a chance to catch up on the 70s! 😎
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Pfuzylogic Very cool.

She was slightly coked out and freaked when people pushed their way to the front. Festival seating was that way.
One of Tom Petty’s lead guitar played with her. Joe brought the house down when he opened. This was 1983.

@Pfuzylogic 👍️

The audiophiles claim vinyl is better than digital, especially for live performances because it has more dynamic range. I don't think my ear is that refined.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@SW-User Got it. And I think the bottom line is that in order to notice a difference, the listener needs skilled ears, something I don't have. 🤷‍♀️
SW-User
@sarabee1995 Under ideal conditions, if they're mastered identically, they should be indistinguishable to anyone, as long as the digital version hasn't been compressed. Achieving ideal conditions on a turntable is really hard, though, whereas it's easy with digital media.

They're nice for the nostalgia value for oldies like me, or for younger people an interesting piece of the past like rotary phones, and some turntables are really fine. The album art is sometimes sublime, too. But don't buy the hype about them being better.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@SW-User Thanks! That explains a lot.
you live in a great part of DC--what a great place to spend some time. a great city to walk in or just enjoy the rich history. Enjoy!
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@BiasForAction Thanks! I am pretty much loving it here. :)
@sarabee1995 be sure to spend some time in the restaurant lounge of the Hotel Washington on the top floor--I think it is under renovation now though. great place to hang out at night with the best view of the WH and monuments.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@BiasForAction Oh nice. I'll add it to my list! 👍
Livingwell · 61-69, M
You have a goldmine there. I still collect vinyl and I have quite a collection. I also have a quality turntable. It sounds so much better than a CD. Enjoy!
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Livingwell Thanks!
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
Sounds like a very cool discovery
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995 actually I remember playing old records
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@vetguy1991 Remembering back through the cobwebs? ;)
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995 lol yup
SW-User
Go to the cat cafe on the weekend. It’s fun. :-)
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@SW-User Oh nice. I'm more of a dog person than a cat person so part of the experience was lost on me, but still it was pretty cool.
SW-User
@sarabee1995 she grooms our dog every now and then.

There’s a huge dog park in Rockville if you have a dog right now.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@SW-User I don't. I grew up with dogs, but I'm off at grad school right now and a pet doesn't really fit into my life at the moment.
1pebbles · 56-60, F
Welcome to my era of music!
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@1pebbles Well I've always been a little bit of a fan of the time period, but I'm discovering new tunes in his collection for sure.
RoxClymer · 41-45, M
Omg someone from SW that lives within a day's drive of me, I don't know if I should be excited or scared
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@RoxClymer Probably neither since we'll never meet in real life! :)
