I Love My Brothers

I have 4 brothers and 1 sister. I am the oldest and considered the Mom of the bunch.

Our life was hard. My dad died when I was 11 and my mom sank into a life of legal drug addiction, bi polar depression and closet alcoholism. We did not know about the alcoholism until her autopsy. Back in the olden days, my mom could go to the receptionist of her doctor and get valium over the counter, pretty much like candy.

In either event, we did not have a good relationship and when she died, she made sure I inherited a BIG mess and a 12 yr old juvenile delinquent brother.

My children were 6 and 9 and no one wanted him because he was quite the handful. He got into trouble, he started drinking and was really headed to a life of crime.

At one point, I had to tell him this: I am bigger, meaner and stronger. I am going to win just to establish some authority. After all, I was his sister, not his mother.

I straightened his a** out promptly. For every action, there is a reaction I told him. Here are the consequences, I told him. I gained his trust and respect.

One of his girlfriends asked why he listened to me. He said, "She has never let me down. what she says will happen, will happen and above all, i was fair". That made my heart sing.

He credits me for keeping him out of prison. He is one outstanding brother. He lives with me part time now and we are very close.

I did a good job being his surrogate mother. I am proud how he turned out.

AKH, once again, I'm so impressed with you. You give so much of yourself and you're the most thoughtful and considerate person. Now, I see more of what you have gone through... You are such an amazing person! :D I admire your attitude and you, in general, in so many ways. :D

aww sweetie. thank you so much. Life throws us curves. it is up to us to decide whether to catch or throw...

And, sometimes you get beaned in the head... seeing stars and wondering what happened. The funny part, you don't see. Others do, as you wobbly-walk away, still seeing stars and trying to find your way back to something like sanity. (I couldn't resist throwing that "beaned" option in, just for fun. :D )

What a touching story.

I know more than just a couple of people who died as a result of a prescription drug overdose. Drug abuse and alcohol abuse complement one another too well :( Your mother must have gone through serious misery, even if it didn't show.

On behalf of the human race, let me offer my thanks for saving your brother :)

thank you sweetie. my mother was a lost cause. She died from pneumonia but the condition of her body was pitiful. The coroner thought we knew she drank but we didn't..not at all. she hid it well.

And that is something to be very proud of. The best thing is that it worked. Now if we could only do that with everyone.....I know, very wishful thinking.....

Is that the sibling you're closest to?
akindheart · 61-69, F
yes. we are very close. we don't have the same father. His real dad died when he was young. My mom was inthe throes of her addiction when he was born. I practically raised him from birth.
