I Am Full Of Useless Knowledge

The boy was confused about significant numbers so we watched a youtube video about it. I remember in those days I was just as confused, but with no recourse, I had to try many many exercises to see if I finally grasped those rules.

Sad to say - now I have forgotten what I have learnt.

Until today, those significant number rules do not seem very significant to me. Neither have I ever used trigonometry or logarithms after that. Those hours and days spent poring over Maths ten-year series seem like exercises in vain. I enjoyed doing them and getting the answers right but really, do they have any practical use in our daily lives? I regret not reading more books then.

I wonder sometimes if the things deemed important for us to learn are deemed so not because of practical usage but the door they open. The idea of more. Whether we use them or not, we know that path exists and we’ve stood at the beginning and peered a bit at what it has to offer.

@JustNik yes. I think so too. But I always think teachers teaching those things must show kids then the wondrous things in the room. Kids see mathematics as just a set of procedures and rules they must follow. It does not help them to understand how those rules fit into a bigger picture. Maybe that's why I never pursued Maths beyond the A levels. And I have never regretted it.

@novembermoon I bet you’re awesome at what you teach - if I’d have had a math teacher who had the same idea as you for how it should be taught, I might have actually liked it. LOL

We are full of useless knowledge because we are full of knowledge and information. I really doubt that knowledge is power. Certain knowledge can give you power in certain situations, but all in all I doubt it is true.
