I Got Muddy

I had the most amazing disaster whilst walking my dog recently.
The dog loves to get wet, especially if it's hot (and it was). So she ran into a big area of mud and splashed around in it. This is perfectly normal so I wasn't concerned. But, after a while she made it onto a kind of island in the middle of the mud and sat down. And stayed there. I called and called but nothing would make her come back to me! So I had to go and get her.......
I was a bit concerned because I didn't have boots on, it was a dry, warm day. I'd opted for canvas pumps with dark grey socks complete with bright polka dots! I contemplated taking my shoes and socks off, but just hated the idea of going into mud barefoot! With a sigh, I stepped in, hoping it wasn't too deep! As it turned out, it was only ankle depth, so I carefully, but briskly splodged towards the stubborn dog. I was about half way when suddenly the mud yielded much more readily and I gently sank in almost to my knees! It was an odd sensation, a very slow descent, but one that I couldn't stop. The mud was having its way with me!
I stood there, up to my knees, feeling the slimy coldness soaking into my jeans and slowly flowing into my shoes! I was shocked to discover that I was basically stuck, whatever I did, I couldn't seem to budge my feet. I wriggled my toes and struggled, and finally, after what felt like several minutes, became aware of the unmistakable and really rather bizarre sensation of my shoes actually coming off! On the plus side, at a stroke, it was much easier to move in the mud, on the down side, I was in the mud with just my socks on my feet! It was truly surreal as I waded in the thick mud towards the dog, in my once fun, spotty socks! They say feet are a sensitive part of the body, I can vouch for that, I could feel the cold smooth ooze very literally with no shoes on!
I finally retrieved the dog, and had an "interesting" time driving home in muddy socks!

It rains a whole lot where I live, so I drive barefoot all of the time!
