I Cried Today

I work a lot with people in nursing homes. Many of my patients suffer from Alzheimer's and dementia.
I provided a custom manual wheelchair for a woman today with Alzheimer's. She was so happy when her shiny red new wheelchair showed up. Then she called me a poo poo head. She yelled at me for a moment complaining about the food. on her table. (there was nothing on the table)

I just smiled at her..... and she smiled back thinking I was her son. She spoke of things when her son was a child....saying them to me assuming I would remember...

She kept calling my Jerry. I fitted her for the chair dialing it in so that it was optimized for her. After 45 minutes or so I was done and got ready to leave.

I patted her hand and wished her well and she asked me to get the "white thing" on her dresser. I complied. She handed it back to me and said that it was a gift for me to remember her by.... since she couldn't remember who she was. It was a little plastic key ring in the shape of the number one. Probably worth ten cents. I hugged her and thanked her for my gift.

I walked out of her room in the nursing home and quickly stepped into the bathroom and sank to my knees, face in hand.... Crying over the beauty of this kind act by this woman whose mind and life are nearing the end.

Beautiful story. Brought tears to my eyes. I've recently discovered one of the individuals I support is terminally ill. She will not be returning to program. So I went and visited her at home. I had missed her dearly. We had a bittersweet visit. I sat with her and sang all her favourite songs and talked about all the things we did together. She clung to my hand. Although she is nonverbal. Her eyes tell all. Truly a beautiful spirit. I'm so glad that I took the time to go see her.

A return to innocence. And it is a most beautiful thing to witness and at the same time you tend to mourn for them.. My father passed from Alzheimers. Its very hard and trying at times, but amazing at the same time. They basically reverse their mental growth back to infancy. Thank you for your beautiful story and for being such a wonderful compassionate human being. I appreciate you.

You have such a kind heart. I wish there were more people like you in this world. Alzheimer's is an awful disease. My friend's Mom has it and it truly hurts to see how much life it has taken out of her. But I always like to believe that when an illness such as this strikes, a part of you remains. People just have to take the time to find it. And I think for her, on that day, you did.

I am sitting on my couch with a box of tissues. Your story was touching. It made me cry. You are a wonderful man to do something so kind, but more importantly to be in touch with your soul to cry. You are amazing. If only all men were like you. Keep up the beautiful life and posts}}

You are too sweet! You obviously made a difference to her, and that is such a beautiful thing. I love volunteering in nursing homes, because so many of those people are alone and forgotten. But it can be so sad to see. You're have beautiful soul.

When you read a story like this it makes you forget about all of your problems, and it makes you hope that one of your own relatives would be treated with the same grace and dignity you gave this woman...thank you

You are beautiful too. We are all nearing death, but I understand somehow, it's odd to be faced with Alzheimer's/dementia
