Understanding your combatants: Sealioning
[sep]

Sealioning is the name given to a specific, pervasive form of aggressive cluelessness, that masquerades as a sincere desire to understand.

A Sealion is a person who, when confronted with a fact that they don't care to acknowledge, say, the persistence of systemic racism in America, will ask endlessly for "proof" and insist that it is the other person's job to stop everything they are doing and address the issue to their satisfaction.

The name "Sealioning" comes from a most splendid webcomic,* Wondermark, by David Malki.

Notice the key elements:

Pervasiveness - Sealions don't go away.

Pretense to politeness and sincerity - Sealions are just "asking nicely" but they are asking questions that have been asked and answered fully many times, and are unwilling to so much as open a tab to look up the answer, nor will they recognize the validity of your sources, your experience or expertise.

But, really, they just want to know.

As I said in a conversation elsewhere:
Sealioning is not predicated upon any implicit understanding of public/private space, but upon the premise that the asker is "sincere" and therefore all resources possible *must* be immediately diverted to teaching them, immediately. The resources that they could, with minimal effort find, are not the issue. They demand attention - your attention. All of it. RIGHT NOW. And they have no intention of listening, because it's your job to make them understand. It is a specific form of harassment. You may not look away, or point them to a link. You must spend all your time and energy. This isn't a sincere attempt at anythinging. It's a calculated technique to grind an opponent down.
The problem with using this cartoon is it essentially asserts that "bigotry and prejudiced behavior are justifiable as long as the bigotry or prejudices were formed from meeting a member of the group which the bigot is prejudiced against - because all sea lions (or black people, or Jewish people, or Chinese people) are exactly the same, and are effectively indistinguishable from each other."

The behavior you're saying is so annoying using the term sealioning is a function of Russel's Teapot - extraordinary claims which are not scientically falsifiable require extraordinary proofs - the burden of proof for supporting an extraordinary claim being on the person asserting the extraordinary claim.

The "relentless" nature of the questioning would be an example of someone attempting to find some substance in the claim in face of dogmatic responses which feature unexplained in-group jargon, unexplained underlying dogma and potentially left out information that the questionee her or himself may not even know. And in fact, the ignorance of the questioner is generally easily explained - particular strains of post-modern feminism, which might only be believed and accepted by a few tens of thousands of people and are neither commonly known nor easily researched despite your efforts to point out internet links which generally merely reassert your initial claims and do not explain in any detail the idea being discussed, give a glossary of the jargon being used or explain any of the underlying dogma - so if you're arguing a novel form of "sex positive, intersectional, Trans-inclusionary, 3rd Wave Feminism" it is highly possible that no one outside the in-group of believers could be expected to have educated her or himself on your beliefs since your beliefs are rare enough and recent enough in development, that very few people hold them, are aware of them or understand them. Things that you believe have routinely been "asked and answered" might never have been discussed with anyone outside the in-group of people who share your beliefs.

It is comforting to assume that simply asserting a viewpoint is enough and that it is the rest of the world's problem to educate itself about that viewpoint, but if you expound rare or novel views or you make extreme claims, it is to you to prove them.

:D Great comic.

Yep, they never put the same burden of proof on themselves that they expect from everyone else.

TL;DR
Feminists are sea lions

You're welcome.

Let's be honest. Who most looks like a sea lion out of the two of us? 😄
Seriously though, worth a read.

I can't stop laughing at that comic, but goddamn if this isn't true.
Jesus, feminists don't even try to downplay their stereotypes. Have a question? Got an objection? Countervailing evidence? A different worldview? Don't worry, feminists have some cheap, demeaning nickname for you too!

If you're desperate for love and for people to respect you, perhaps you should try to put yourself in someone else's shoes for a moment instead of assuming that you're the only one with anything valuable to say.
