I Think We Take Too Much For Granted

Am glad I was born in modern times. For a long time patients undergoing surgery were fully awake, writhing in agony as the surgeon-who did not wash his hands-tried to make incisions and finish treatment before the patient died from blood loss. Death due to infection in the wounds was also common. It was not until the 19th century that safe surgery began to develop.

Many people don't appreciate just how lucky we are today. They take things for granted.

It would have been making do with just two bathings per year that would have been hardest for me to endure. But after all, bathing was considered unhealthy.

But back to your point I read that in the U.S. Civil War most soldiers died from infection rather than their actual battlefield wounds.

True. Even today more than 50% of deaths worldwide are from infections.
