And for some reasons I prefer to read essays lately over novels or short stories. I feel more interested in other people's thoughts than their lives. I see more diversity in the inside than in the outside.
Sometimes I think it is the diversity of the outside that gives rise to the diversity on the inside. Different circumstances shape our thoughts and the way we react. We can never be independent or separate from our immediate surroundings.
@Cierzo: His thoughts on the story Ridiculous Man were good, it all made me start with House of the Dead.... the thought of his message being from the angel of death, providing double sight.... good stuff, Shestov might turn me on to Tolstoy someday too if i allow it:)
@TraumenDenkener: I was not fond of Tolstoi in my younger years and now I love his work, especially 'Death of Ivan Ilitch' and 'Resurrection'.

@Cierzo: How about his non-fiction like Kingdom of God is Within You, i liked the idea of that influencing Gandhi, but when it came to actually reading it, golly!!! Ivan Illych story is great though, i like how it's incorporated in a Pasolini film - Teorema:)
