I Mourn The Passing Of Leelah Alcorn

Leelah Alcorn, born Joshua Ryan Alcorn, age 17, walked out in front of a semi truck last Sunday leaving behind a suicide note detailing her struggle to transition to the person she felt inside rather than the genetic body she was born with and the resistance and rejection from her family and community. Gurls, girls, ladies, Ts, cds - however you identify yourself - I know your road is hard ; even LGBs acknowledge that you have it harder than them; but being able to discover that you are not the only person like this in the world and that there are others with similar experiences who are willing to talk and share and support one another can possibly save someone from choosing a similar fate. All is not lost and it isn't as dark as it seems.

I've been following this story as I have often had these similar thoughts and found myself either staring over the side of a building or at a line of cars. This is very tragic not only for someone with so much life ahead of her, but also how common this is in the trans community.

In my limited experience with the professional world, there seem to be way too few therapists that understand trans issues and WPATH, and too many whom try to classify it as a some disorder in their DSM manual and seem to separate depression and being trans as two different things.

Please support others that are struggling to understand themselves, and lets try to be there for each other the best we can. Just having others that I can relate to in the virtual world like EP helps me connect and controls those dark thoughts that lurk nearby some days.

I am saddened today for Leelah and hope that she has found the peace she sought. If anyone else feels they need someone to listen to, I am always here. Namaste.

I sometimes find myself hoping that reincarnation is real and that "next time" I'll be born a girl.

My heart breaks for Leela and the ones who loved her. She was so young.

When will society learn that being transgender is special? That true enlightenment can only happen when the male and female minds converge. That being Yin AND Yang is a blessing that most will never achieve .
The power of the written word now leaves me questioning my initial comments about wanting to be a girl. I suppose we should just all be ourselves and treat each other with love and respect.

I feel sad for any young individual who decides life ending measures are the end-all-be-all. Not knowing this child, I still carry him/her in my prayers.

Yes it is a sad situation when your family are ignorant to the facts and wont respect your choice.

Such a sad story,a shame she got no support from her family

It saddens me deeply that she felt she had no one to turn to.
