I Was Abandoned By My Mother

Long story short, my mom ran out on us to have her own life and barely calls or returns our calls. She sends us postcards. It is hard not having a female role model around and I live in a house of men. It sucks. My aunt has stepped in to help us and me when I was going through puberty. She helped me with lady things. I appricated it, but I prefer my mom but my mom has done NONE of those things. She left when I was in third grade. I was always jealous of my friends because they had mothers who we're there to be part of their lives. I look at them as mother figures but it isn't the same. I want MY MOMMY. I want her. It isn't fair. Mom why did you do this to us?! We needed you! I especially needed you. I need you mom!

Hi! I am an undergraduate researcher at the University of Sussex. I am studying the experiences of people who grew up with an absent mother figure, specifically looking at abandonment and I would really appreciate it if anyone who it applies to could take a few minutes to complete my survey. Your answers are anonymous, and you can skip any questions that make you uncomfortable. Thank you for taking the time to participate!

Your Mom had nothing to give...that's clear. Anyone who runs from their children would be a very bad parent if they stayed. I grew up alone with a very violent mother who should not have had a kid. I don't even suggest that you should not feel abandoned by her...you were, but really, if she had stayed I feel sure she would have abandoned you emotionally and let me tell you....it is worse because they are only there physically. You'll make your way in life without her. There will be other women to fill the gap and you can become a stronger woman for it. Don't let this keep you down. Accept it as much as possible...you won't do this to your kids I am sure...lucky them! Most importantly, it is NOT your fault...it is ALL her issue!

@EmptyGirl2001 My life would have been MUCH better if my mother had "abandoned" me...left physically. She told me constantly that I was a mistake and that I ruined her life. You certainly are not a mistake. You seem smart and sensitive. and yes...you WILL be a wonderful Mom! This is a very hard lesson and I am so sorry for your loss....stay strong and don't give her all your power by taking ANY responsibility for her selfishness and weakness.

Wow.....I'm so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine what you're going through. At least your aunt stepped in to help.
