I Have Strict Parents

I know I do. My mom is the most strict since she is Asian. I heard all Asian moms are very strict and overprotective of their kids. But if you're Asian and were adopted by a White couple than you are one of the lucky ones. I use to have a friend who was Asian and she told me she was adopted by a White couple and they always gave her a lot of freedom to do what she wanted. So, she was one of the lucky ones. I realized of course that American families aren't as strict like other races and cultures. I felt like I was always treated unfairly because I would see other kids being allowed to do the things that I wanted to do.

Since my parents were strict, it was very hard for me growing up, especially in high school. I wasn't allowed to date, have boyfriends, go to parties or even to my own high school prom. They always kept me very sheltered and isolated from other people because they didn't want me to be around boys and get pregnant like a lot of young girls do nowadays. They didn't want me to end up like other girls who got pregnant and dropped out of high school or college. It was very tough for me in high school because it made me miss out on a lot of things. Plus, I hardly had any friends. I was never happy being a teenager. Those were like the most depressing years of my life, including my 20's. I wasn't very happy in my 20s either.

Since I'm in my late 30's now, they're not as strict anymore. I have a little more freedom. Even though it was rough for me growing up, but I know they did the best they could to raise me. I even wrote a poem about it for my 11th grade English class. I remember my teacher who told me to meet her outside of the classroom to talk to me. She said, "Are you really thinking about killing yourself?" I said, "No." Then she says, do you know why they're strict on you?" Then I reply, "Because they love me." Then she says, "That's right...because they love you." When I recited the poem in front of my class and they heard the last part, they all laughed and thought it was funny. I guess they knew that I really wasn't serious.

Here's the poem that I wrote when I was in high school.

Prisoner In My Own House

I’m like a prisoner in my own house,
Struggling to get out.
My friends, where are they?
Somewhere else? Or will I be by myself?

When will someone hear my cries and know I’m still alive?
Or should I just die and commit suicide?

I honestly hated high school (freshmen year was the worst). Things weren't restricted per se, but I just didn't get treated well for most of it. Also, so much of what is technically supposed to be done (social groups, volunteering, etc.) during that time in life wasn't done based upon personal scenario.

@Stereoguy Yes I am. Even though I'm a grown up now, they're still protective over me. They don't want me to just date or be friends with anyone.
