Have You Ever Had This Happen To You?

Back in the late 60s, I met a young woman who was visiting the house I lived in (I shared with roommates). She ignored me when I spoke to her, then whispered to a man wearing what looked like an expensive suit and he spoke to me to answer me. She would only communicate through him, as if he was an interpreter. As far as I know, she did speak English and was from America. (I had met her family once as a child; they all spoke English). But throughout her 2 day visit to our household, she spoke directly to other people there but only spoke through her interpreter to me. I lost my boyfriend to her. She was very pretty and that was no doubt a factor. He told me he admired her because she was a virgin saving it for her wedding night while I was merely a feckless hippie chick with loose morals.

I have a theory about this woman but it could easily be wrong. Has anyone here ever had the experience of talking to someone who would only speak through an interpreter even though you both spoke the same language?

Recently, I found out this woman has succeeded at one of the arts and now has her own website. So I emailed her asking if she remembered me and the place where we met in Santa Monica, CA. It should be interesting to get her answer. If she has any memory of our meeting, I will ask her if she can explain her odd behavior of using an interpreter to talk to me. But I have a feeling she will say she has no memory of meeting me at all.

I once had a "friend" who wouldn't communicate with me directly, but only through other people who claimed to know him better than I did. They told me to speak to him and he would listen, but I soon found that if I did this in public, people would think I was nutz. It didn't take me long to decide this guy wasn't really my friend, so I "unfriended" him. His father was pretty famous, too.

@SomeAreBoojums Actually, my own father was semi-famous at one point when I was little (he was a film writer whose two short subjects won Academy Awards), so it wasn't as though my own family totally lacked all social status. However, my dad's career had been cut short by the Hollywood Blacklist of the 1950s so when I met her, my dad was, at that point, unknown. But her family was heavily left wing so I wouldn't think my dad's Blacklist problems would've been an issue.

Were you the only woman she did that too? Even though you both spoke english, as her background the same? That is strange

@BecaA57 As far as I could see, she talked directly to everyone else in the house (man or woman).

No, that's weird. I thought only famous people did that

@DavidScott Her father was a famous person.
