Well, our general excuse is "oh there are references to pop culture ect", but the truth is a think we all just think ponies are adorable.
You may also want to check out tiarawhy's YouTube video 'friendship was magic'. It's what originally got me into the show. I couldn't believe that something of such drama could have been inspired by the show.
