I Have Something to Say and I Want to Be Heard

Assuming there are aliens out there and we'll one day meet them I've always wondered what one of the defining characteristics of humanity will be. I've always found one idea the most poetic, and the one I hope ends up being true. And that's people's amazing ability to make the greatest breakthroughs when idly enjoying some of the small pleasures in life.

Such as the scientist the suddenly hits upon the simple equation that lays the fabric of the cosmos bare while becalmed on their favorite lake. Or the playwright that while sitting and watching a sunset suddenly finds the perfect line of dialogue that will be repeated for centuries as a statement on some universal aspect of life on this planet; a line which ends a scene of drama so sublime that it will be studied for equally as long and for the same reason. Or the philosopher that divines the true nature of the human condition while kicking a ball with a complete stranger in a park.

Well anyhoo...it'd be super nifty if that ever ends up being that case.

It's an interesting thought and one I consider often. Although our humanity as it is this moment is only a brief crack of light in the vastness of the existence of the universe. Our planet is a latecomer to the universe, mammals latecomers to the earth, humans latecomers to the Mammalia class, and speech and writing latecomers to our evolving selves.

The chances of us meeting evolved aliens is entirely remote at best, but ones that are in their equally narrow crack of light?

If we did, though, I imagine aliens wouldn't be so different to some of the life we have on earth. Then again, without the dinosaur extinction, reptiles would have evolved as the highest order and the prime species would have been reptilian rather than mammalian. I wonder how that would have gone.
