I Love Scuba Diving

I went to Hawaii with a friend to do some Scuba. We rented a tank and regulator harness set and got into the water around 9am. The ocean was dead flat and no wind.

We were down the usual 40 minutes enjoying the scenery, but it was time to head up as our air was running low.

When we got to the surface the ocean was a mass of swells and whitecaps. The Trade Winds had started.

We tried to swim into shore but the waves were crashing into the rocks with some force, so we attempted to swim along the shoreline hoping to find a sandy area to come in on. My partner got just a bit too close though and was picked up by a wave and carried further in, the next wave picked him up and hurled him onto the rocks where he was dragged up and the water attempted to drag him back out again. I think he was actually dragged back out once, but my memory if fuzzy on that. He did manage to get a hold of the rock though and held on until the water receded, and was then able to get out. He had scratches over most of his body and was bleeding from several areas.

I managed to swim into a cove and get out without too much drama.

Later on that trip were were doing swell diving, which was really fun, wait on the rocks and watch the swells come in, then jump on top of one and ride it out. Coming back in was similar. A lot of fun, and super easy once you figure out the timing.

Lots of sharks, turtles, old unexploded ordinance etc. Beautiful place.

no pirate booty?
We found a giant conch on one dive, and an old spear and some other small things. The conch we had to leave as it still had the critter in it, but it was very large.

That old spear was neat too, no idea how old it was, but we had to leave it in the apartment because of course we couldn't take that on the airplane easily.

@BalletDancer: lmao, what was the spear made of?
@xSharp: It was metal, maybe aluminum. It had some black markings on it. I don't recall details about it.

@BalletDancer: i see, probably was not worth its weight anyway.
